Telemark county extends from the coast along the southeast to the Hardangervidda, a huge mountain plateau in the northwest. In between are numerous long valleys, ideal for recreational activities.
Telemark has a population of 166,124 and its capital is Porsgrunn, long noted for the fine china manufactured there.
The county name means land of the Teler. stemming from the name of the tribe that lived there long before the Viking era. Until 1919 the coastal part of Telemark was called Grenland.
