Vestfold is the second smallest county in Norway but has the largest population per square mile. Vestfold has a population of 219,480 and the capital is Tønsberg, founded in about 870 and the oldest town in Norway.
Hundreds of years ago the Oslo fjord was called Fold, a word meaning open sea. Vestfold means the land on the western side of the Fold. While the county does not have mountains it has beautiful seaside areas and is filled with history.
Vestfold was the home of King Harold the Fair-hair who succeeded in unifying the country into one kingdom in the 800's. The Gokstad Viking ship was excavated near Sandefjord and now is housed at the Viking ship museum in Oslo.
